Beacon, Seaton Sluice
This is one of many such beacons located across the UK which were last lit in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. This one stands on the headland close to the spot where there was once a windlass connected with the loading operations at the harbour immediately below. A windlass is a piece of apparatus for moving heavy weights and, typically, it consists of a horizontal cylinder, which is rotated by the turn of a crank or belt. A winch is affixed to one or both ends, and a cable or rope is wound around the winch, pulling a weight attached to the opposite end.
