The memorial is for the RAF crew of 297 Squadron who were killed near this site on 27th August 1944 in Albemarle V1782, see SP2903 : Memorial plaque commemorating WW2 plane crash near Black Bourton. The aircraft hit trees on a go-around from RAF Brize Norton and crashed, killing all five occupants and writing off the aircraft. LinkExternal link
