These cars were used to weigh materials, such as coke, before they were put into the furnace, in this case No.5 Bessemer furnace at Cleveland Iron Works. This scale car was used in the second half of the 20C until the works was closed in the 1980s. (From the text on the information plaque) The museum has extensive exhibits and information about the Teesside iron industry.
