Station Road, Montpelier
Looking down Station Road to its junction with Cheltenham Road. In the distance an Avonmouth-bound train heads across Cheltenham Road Viaduct. In the mid-distance the abutments either side of Station Road carried the line down to the station coal yard. This had formally been 'taken out of use' in February 1966 (although in reality the yard had been closed in 1965) so the bridge had been removed very promptly.
Montpelier railway station, Bristol
The station was opened on 1 October 1874 as Montpellier by the Great Western and Midland Railways as part of the Clifton Extension Railway. Goods services at Montpelier (as it was known by then) ended in 1965, and all staff were withdrawn in 1967. The line was largely reduced to single track in 1970, with the northern platform abandoned and all trains using the remaining platform. (Extract of the Wikipedia entry).
