Montpelier Station, with a mystery!
Montpelier Station, with a mystery!
Why on earth was a box van being propelled through Montpelier Station by a Class 08 diesel shunter? I'm sure it must have come from as far as Avonmouth because all the goods yards at the intermediate stations had closed by the date of the photo. The substantial booking office building is prominent on the up platform. Behind it are the houses on Cromwell Road.
Montpelier railway station, Bristol

The station was opened on 1 October 1874 as Montpellier by the Great Western and Midland Railways as part of the Clifton Extension Railway. Goods services at Montpelier (as it was known by then) ended in 1965, and all staff were withdrawn in 1967. The line was largely reduced to single track in 1970, with the northern platform abandoned and all trains using the remaining platform. (Extract of the Wikipedia entry).
