Oyster Farm, South Walney
Oyster Farm, South Walney
Although the landscape of South Walney is constantly changing due to the prevailing westerly winds and action of the sea, people have utilised this exposed stretch of land for hundreds of years. During the medieval period it was farmed by the monks of Furness Abbey and during the 19th and 20th centuries salt, sand and gravel were extracted, leaving large lagoons and industrial remains, which influence the wildlife found today.
The South Walney Nature Reserve :: SD2261

The South Walney Nature Reserve covers an area of 130 hectares on the southern tip of a shingle island lying off the Furness Peninsula. It has been managed by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust LinkExternal link since 1963. The reserve is also the home of the Walney Bird Observatory which collates bird records from across the island. Around 300 species of bird have been recorded on Walney Island since the foundation of the bird observatory in 1964.
