Descent to Stwarth and Dale Gills
A well-defined track (mostly coinciding with a public footpath) descends northwards from Green Bell heading for both Weasdale and Newbiggin-on-Lune. As the ridge flattens on Stwarth, a branch path heads more to the east before becoming invisible in the rather boggy flat area. It reppears as a quite well-defined path pretty much in the centre of this view, and may well exist to our right as we make our descent from Stwarth towards a very obvious crossing point of Dale Gill in the middle distance. The map also shows a track materialising to our left, eventually reaching Greenside Lane at the same point, but the view of that from above suggested that it would be exceptionally wet underfoot. The route directly ahead of us here crosses short, dry green turf for some distance so proved to be a very pleasant way off the fell, nicely sheltered from the wind which had deterred us from having lunch on the tops.
