The Curzon under wraps
The Curzon under wraps
The local champion of culture, the Curzon cinema, is undergoing yet more repairs and renovation. The cinema is not part of a global chain but a fiercely independent concern. However, funding has always been a problem to maintain the theatre and the work on the roof is costly.

It opened in 1912 and its first showing was a fund-raising event for survivors of the R.M.S. Titanic sinking. The present building is a newer version that was opened in 1922, and claims to be one of the world's oldest continually showing cinemas.
