Jesmond Station – 1966
Jesmond Station – 1966
Following the replacement of the Tyneside local services by the Tyne and Wear Metro, this station was closed, as the Metro entered a tunnel under the city centre just to the north, with a new station. Link . The old station still survives, the line providing a non-passenger link onto the Tynemouth line at Manors.

The local services were electrified by the North Eastern Railway from 1904 onwards, one of just a handful of electrified suburban services outside London. This view shows one of the later electric units built by the London and North Eastern Railway in 1937. Due to the ageing electrical supply system, the electric trains were replaced in 1967 by diesel trains before being replaced themselves by the Tyne and Wear Metro.
