Daddy-long-legs showing club-like halteres
Daddy-long-legs showing club-like halteres
The two club-like projections from the thorax behind the wings of this cranefly are halteres. These on flies replace the second pair of wings on other insects. In flight they oscillate and act like gyroscopes to give information about the body rotation. There are sense organs at the base of the halteres.
This daddy-long-legs had been in our kitchen and settled apparently dormant but alive on a window sill.
