Great Hall, Oundle School, 12 New Street, Oundle
Great Hall, Oundle School, 12 New Street, Oundle
Grade II Listed school by Arthur C Blomfield 1907. The North and South wings were added shortly after 1907. One of Oundle’s very few buildings which have any kind of ‘setting’, as it sits back from the road with an attractive lawn in front of it. FW Sanderson as Headmaster of Oundle School was instrumental in transforming the school into the establishment it is today, the Great Hall, Science Block and the Yarrow being built during his tenure from 1892 to 1922. The school had also acquired some of Oundle’s finest houses including Cobthorne the Headmasters residence. Sir William Laxton, Lord Mayor of London and Master of the Worshipful Company of Grocers endowed a ‘Free Grammar School’ in Oundle in 1556. The Grocers' Company took over the Joan Wyatt school (who endowed a schoolmaster in 1485) and discharged its obligation to Sir William as it does to this day. In 1876 the school was split into Laxton Grammar School and Oundle School, reuniting in 2000.
