This is the old alignment of the back of Epsom Downs racecourse, seen from the turn of Downs House Road. For a view up from the bottom, see TQ2158 : The Old Racecourse.
Old Racecourse
The Old Racecourse lies below the present start to the racecourse on Epsom Downs: some 2,400m from the finishing line. Trainers and jockeys loathed the steep uphill start to races from the bottom of the valley, and the course was eventually moved to its present higher alignment, slightly to the south, in the nineteenth century. These hedged baulks still mark the old course.
