The Monument, Southport – 1966
The Monument was the main town centre terminus for services operated by Southport Corporation. Two of the Corporation's traditional Leyland PD2 buses flank a newcomer. This was a Leyland Atlantean owned by Leyland Motors and available on loan to operators for demonstration and evaluation.

Note the route number 007. The older buses have a single number blind with the necessary route numbers for the local network, but the demonstration bus needed to be flexible and had three separate number blinds. 1966 was when the Bond movie cult was just beginning and if the bus happened to be working on a route 7, drivers would delight in displaying it like this.

This is one of a series of views featuring buses in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Southport War Memorial

Southport's war memorial (also known as "The Monument") was built in 1923 following a national competition. There is a central obelisk, twin colonnaded cenotaphs, lamps representing the five major battles of the First World War and formal gardens with reflective pools.

The monument has recently (March 2010) been listed as “of national importance”, being granted ‘Grade II*status following an 18-month campaign by Southport Civic Society. (Historic England List Entry Number: 1379604 LinkExternal link Heritage Gateway)
