Near the Norman Tower and at the edge of the Great Churchyard is the Martyrs Memorial. Erected in 1903 by public subscription, the memorial is in memory of 17 Protestant martyrs most of whom were burnt at the stake. Listed, grade II, with details at: LinkExternal link
The Abbey Gardens occupy the site of St Edmund's Abbey. In 1953 the Borough bought the Gardens and managed the area around the abbey ruins, thus reuniting the two main parts of the Abbey Precinct - the Abbey Gardens and the Great Churchyard. The gardens are on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, grade II, and there is much history and detail at: LinkExternal link Except for the Great Churchyard the site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and there is much history and detail at: LinkExternal link
