Within the Great Churchyard are the ruins of the Chapel of the Charnel. This large chancel house was built in flint rubble with stone dressings in the 13th century and held bones dug up to make way for fresh burials. At various times the chapel has been used as a house, a blacksmiths and a public house. Many memorial tablets have been set into the walls of the building which is surrounded by cast-iron railings. On land once occupied by the abbey, the Great Churchyard lies between the cathedral and the church of St Mary and contains some 1,200 burials, many of which are listed.
The Abbey Gardens occupy the site of St Edmund's Abbey. In 1953 the Borough bought the Gardens and managed the area around the abbey ruins, thus reuniting the two main parts of the Abbey Precinct - the Abbey Gardens and the Great Churchyard.
