The cathedral from near the Norman Tower.
There has been a church on the site of St Edmundsbury Cathedral (formerly the cathedral church of St James and St Edmund) since the 11th century. The parish church of St James was largely rebuilt in the early 16th century in the Perpendicular style. Alterations were made in the 18th and 19th centuries, principally a new chancel. The church became a cathedral in 1914 and starting in 1959, the building has been constantly enhanced with a quire, cloister, transepts and chapels. The main addition has been a 150 foot (46 metres) tower in the Gothic Revival style. Listed, grade I, with details at: LinkExternal link
The Abbey Gardens occupy the site of St Edmund's Abbey. In 1953 the Borough bought the Gardens and managed the area around the abbey ruins, thus reuniting the two main parts of the Abbey Precinct - the Abbey Gardens and the Great Churchyard. The gardens are on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, grade II, and there is much history and detail at: LinkExternal link Except for the Great Churchyard the site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and there is much history and detail at: LinkExternal link
