The brewery was first situated here in 1755, and enlarged in 1882. The main borehole was 192 feet deep. It changed hands several times, the longest period in a single name being as Hartleys from 1896 until 1982 when Robinsons of Stockport took over. The brewery ceased working on 21 October 1991, and the boiler house, chimney and pumphouse were demolished c.1994. As of 2020 the remaining buildings were still extant but looking in a poor state, but the site has been sold to a developer who is expected to retain at least some of the brewery buildings. Despite the age of the buildings and their local significance, they are not subject to statutory listing.

A legacy of Robinsons' ownership is that most of the town centre pubs are still Robinsons tied houses.
