Muncaster St Michael
Although situated within the grounds of Muncaster Castle, and in many ways the Pennington family church, this is not merely a private chapel but a parish church of the Church of England in the Diocese of Carlisle. The earliest parts are 12th century, with a 15th century chancel, but it was restored and enlarged in 1874 by Anthony Salvin who had earlier restored and enlarged the castle itself. Listed grade I (list entry 1356113). Information from listing and the Church Heritage Record.
Muncaster Castle and grounds
The castle, unlike many, is owned neither by English Heritage nor the National Trust but is still in the hands of the Pennington family who have owned it almost continuously since the 13th century. The grounds of around 100ha, including an owl sanctuary, are open to the public for a fee and are grade II* listed (entry 1000669). The castle and the parish church within the grounds are listed grade I.
