AGS School Camp, Sea View Farm
For many years Altrincham Grammar School for Boys ran a summer camp at Sea View Farm, Otterton in Devon. The majority of the boys would spend two weeks under canvas in bell tents, which had been pitched by an advanced party of older boys and staff a few days before they arrived. A wide variety of activities were arranged, including fishing trips, visits to nearby towns etc, but one of the main attractions was the proximity to Ladram Bay, about 500 metres away.
The farmer allowed the school to keep equipment, including floor boards for the bell tents, a large calor gas cooking range and other large items in a wooden building in the field that was used each year.
There were often well over 100 attendees at the camp, including staff and their families and old boys. The last camp ran in 1967.
This photograph, probably taken in 1965 or 1966, shows some of the tents with High Peak in the distance. It was taken by the contributor’s father, Geoffrey William Sutcliffe (1907-2004), a teacher at the school, who ran the camp for many years.
