The church SD3598 : St Michael and All Angels, Hawkshead is grade I listed (list entry 1087259). The door in the north wall bears the date 1578 and the arms of "local boy made good", Edwin Sandys. He was born in 1519 at Esthwaite Hall near here, but rose to become Chancellor of Cambridge University, later Bishop of London and eventually Archbishop of York in 1576.
