) Cenotaph was designed by Edwin Lutyens, the designer of the Cenotaph in Whitehall in London. It was completed in time for the Allied Victory Parade in 1919. Built of Portland stone it is topped by a sculpture of the unknown soldier draped in his greatcoat. It originally stood opposite the Central Library SJ8397 : Manchester Cenotaph. In 2014 St Peter's Square was substantially redeveloped and the Cenotaph was moved to its present site outside the Town Hall. Now the Town Hall itself is undergoing restoration and is covered over.
Manchester Town Hall
Completed in 1887, this most impressive neo-Gothic building cost a million pounds and is acknowledged as a masterpiece in its own right. It rises as a Victorian edifice - a monument to the civic pride of the city fathers, reaching 286 feet above Albert Square below. Designed by Alfred Waterhouse. It is a Grade I listed building. Link
