The sign is surmounted by the coronation crown of Queen Elizabeth II and the date 2002, the fiftieth anniversary of the coronation. The shield itself is quartered bearing the silhouettes of a sheaf of corn representing the agricultural heritage of the village, the church of All Saints, two pigs peeking over a fence, representing the piggery at Walnut Tree Farm, and a tree with rooks in the branches representing the rookery on The Green.

Village Signs of East Anglia

Village signs are typically placed along the principal road or in a prominent location such as a village green or close by the church. The design often depicts a particularly feature of the village or a scene from its history, heritage, or culture. They are typically made of wood or metal or a combination of both, the designs are often made by the local community.
Although they do appear in villages and towns all over the country they are more prominent in East Anglia than elsewhere in the country.

Village signs of Suffolk

Suffolk has 400 villages and towns with village or town signs, give or take one or two.
The tradition of village signs is believed to have started in Norfolk early in the 20th century when Edward VII suggested that village signs would aid motorists and give a feature of interest on the Sandringham Estate.
Many of the signs were made by Harry Carter, an art and woodwork master at Hamond’s Grammar School, in Swaffham.
Many have now been replaced with fibreglass or modern plastics. The story behind the sign is given as accurately as possible.
