A young Soay sheep in 'The Village' (am Baile) on Hirta
When Hirta was inhabited, the sheep on the island were Boreray sheep. These sheep were brought to the mainland when Hirta was evacuated in 1930. Later, some Soay sheep were transferred to Hirta. My understanding is that Soay sheep were the subject of a continuous scientific investigation, and the researchers found Hirta much easier to land on than Soay itself!
