Plaque commemorating LTC Rolt
Plaque commemorating LTC Rolt
Lionel Thomas Caswall Rolt was born in Chester in 1910 and this plaque commemorates his life, and the fact that his book 'Narrow Boat' "...led directly to the formation of the Inland Waterways Association in 1946". Unfortunately his middle name 'Caswall' is spelt 'Caswell' on the plaque. 'Caswall' was his great grandmother's maiden name, and was included in his father's name along with five of his uncles. His great grandfather was born in Cork, and was a Major General in the British army KGB, so quite a distinguished family. The plaque can be seen in situ in SJ3966 : Bridge over the Shropshire Union Canal
