New length of road at Lambley
Closure of the Haltwhistle to Alston branch railway was planned as part of the Beeching cuts of the 1960s. However, the existing road network was inadequate for a replacement bus service, with NY6855 : Eals Bridge being a particular problem. Eventually the problem was resolved in 1976 with the construction of this new length of road linking Lambley with Coanwood on the far side of the River South Tyne. The closure of the railway followed.
Lambley Viaduct formerly had a long footbridge bracketed off the piers a good way below the railway. When was this dismantled? A few views showing this are at RCTS (former)Mystery Photographs
