Stanstead village sign
Stanstead sign is double sided. the side which faces north, shows the church of St James in the background and a Norman warrior and two shields. On a banner the names of Bernay, Walsham and Hugh de Montfort in a bush of white roses. The abbey of St Mary of Bernay Montfort was Lord of the Manor at the time of Domesday. The other side shows the old postmill which used to stand in the main street. The horses are standing beside the River Glem and the angels are copied from the corbels in the church. Wild roses decorate the scene.
Stanstead is not to be confused with Stansted in Essex, where the airport is. This Stanstead is much quieter as depicted on this side of the sign.

Village Signs of East Anglia

Village signs are typically placed along the principal road or in a prominent location such as a village green or close by the church. The design often depicts a particularly feature of the village or a scene from its history, heritage, or culture. They are typically made of wood or metal or a combination of both, the designs are often made by the local community.
Although they do appear in villages and towns all over the country they are more prominent in East Anglia than elsewhere in the country.
