The sign is a quartered shield with the English lion in the centre. In the top left is the present day village hall which is named after Amy Robsart. In 1549 Amy Robsart married Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and was probably murdered by him. Her ghost haunted the village for many years. The right quarter depicts the church of St Mary. A tractor ploughs the field giving reference to the agricultural heritage of the village, and a natterjack toad inhabits the final quarter as well as inhabiting Syderstone Common. Link
Village Signs of East Anglia

Village signs are typically placed along the principal road or in a prominent location such as a village green or close by the church. The design often depicts a particularly feature of the village or a scene from its history, heritage, or culture. They are typically made of wood or metal or a combination of both, the designs are often made by the local community.
Although they do appear in villages and towns all over the country they are more prominent in East Anglia than elsewhere in the country.
