SE3651 : All Saints, Spofforth - churchyard wall
taken 3 years ago, near to Spofforth, North Yorkshire, England
The early history of Spofforth parish church is linked with the Percy family who owned the manor from 1067. Although not mentioned in Domesday there has been a church on the site from medieval times. The tower is 15th century, and some Norman work survives in the south wall, arcades and chancel arch, but the remainder was rebuilt in 1855 with a shortened chancel, for the long-serving Rector James Tripp, the architect being J W Hugall. The church is listed grade II* (list entry 1149981) and is currently in the parish of Spofforth with Kirk Deighton in the Diocese of Leeds.
Associated with the church are the remains of the 12th century Chantry House, a few hundred metres to the south, now forming part of Massey Garth (listed grade II, list entry 1174615)
