Former Mineral Railway Bridge over Niddry Burn
Former Mineral Railway Bridge over Niddry Burn
In the late 1800s there were a bewildering array of railway lines, brickworks, quarries, coal mines and shale mines around the Broxburn area. And as there are gaps of up to 40-odd years between old maps it is often near impossible to ascertain what railway lines served what works and carried their produce to where.
The task is made harder due to there having been so many shortlived enterprises in the mid to late 19th century boom years too - operations that didn't even appear as operational on previous maps are described as old or disused on the next ones!
There were definitely shale mines, quarries, and brickworks served by this line at some point though, and the line passes through two of the four oil works in the vicinity. To the NorthEast was Hopetoun Oil Works, and to the SouthWest Was Uphall Oil Works, which was actually sited in Uphall Station, not Uphall. So it is a possibility that a shale mine operating along this line could have sent their quarry either way depending on whoever was offering the best price at the time!
