Cochlearia - Scurvy Grass

Danish Scurvy Grass [Cochlearia danica] is a British native plant, and not a grass, but a member of the Brassicaceae. Essentially coastal in their distribution originally, because of their salt tolerance, they have become widespread inland as a result of winter salting of roads. Individually the plants are insignificant, but more interesting when seen close up. Several shoots form a rosette, up to 15 cm diam.; leaves are rounded kidney or ivy-leaf shaped, and slightly fleshy, and rich source of Vitamin C [hence its name, and its use in preventing scurvy]. The flowers are 5 mm diam, with 4 white-purplish petals, 4.5 mm long, 6 anthers and a central stigma. Seeds are produced in rounded capsules 3 x 6 mm, which can be seen in some of the close-up photos.
