The monument was erected in 1807 in honour of Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson. Visible on the south face of the monument there is an Ordnance Survey flush bracket benchmark (photograph NU1702 : Flush Bracket, Nelson Monument) and on the east face of the monument there is an Ordnance Survey 1GL bolt benchmark (photograph NU1702 : Benchmark, Nelson Monument).
