Skyways Coach Air G-ARRW at Lympne airport – 1968
Skyways Coach Air was a London – Paris service with an air leg between Beauvais and Lympne airports with coach links between the airports and the respective cities, and is considered to be the world's first low cost airline. Fares undercut both existing airlines and also surface modes.
I used it in an emergency, having been studying in Paris at the time of the Paris unrest of May 1968, and need to exit the country in a hurry before all facilities closed down during the general strike. It was the very last departure from Beauvais, leaving only minutes before the airport traffic control was closed down.
The plane is an HS748, a popular, relatively early, turbo-prop passenger plane for short haul work. Production ran from 1961 to 1988, G-ARRW being built in 1963 for BKS before joining Skyways in 1967. Her flying career ended in 1996 when she was damaged in an accident while operating in Nepal.
As the airport no longer exists, I have had to estimate the location and view direction.
