NHS Nightingale North East, Washington
The NHS Nightingale Hospital in Washington was one of seven built in England to cope with the feared pressures on the NHS from the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Converted in just a few weeks from an empty warehouse built for the motor industry, the hospital was designed to hold 460 intensive care beds divided between 16 wards.
However, despite opening in May 2020 the hospital never had to be used to treat a single patient. It was to be a last resort in case the regions hospitals became overwhelmed.
From Tuesday 26 January 2021, it opened as the second large vaccination centre for the North East and North Cumbria. It is part of a network of 49 mass vaccination sites across England.
