Electricity transmission tower in Elland Park Wood
The 1:1250 map of 1961 shows the cables continuing up the hill to a junction with the long distance cables above Park Nook, presumably to feed the National Grid from the newly opened Elland Power Station. The power station has been closed down and demolished, and now the overhead cables end here and are taken down into the ground. They go along Park Road and up Plains Lane to another tower (see SE1022 : Pylon on Plains Lane, Elland), where they go overhead again to Sowerby Bridge. The underground cables are due for renewal and this might already have been done, but there is no sign of a recent excavation here in the wood. A public footpath passes the tower. Incidentally 'tower' is the CEGB's term; the Ordnance Survey caption it 'EP' for Electricity pylon.
