Known originally as the Albert Works, this building was constructed in 1863 for W E Wiley, a pen manufacturer, to designs by J G Bland. It consists of narrow, multi-storey workshops around a central courtyard, maximising natural light, and its floors of hollow bricks with iron ties supposedly rendered it fireproof. Steam from the works was supplied to an adjoining Turkish-style baths. Workshops made not only pens but scientific equipment for educational and laboratory use. The building was repaired after bomb damage in the second world war. It now belongs to a community benefit company that lets work space. The Pen Museum occupies part of the ground floor. Link
