Emu and sheep at sunset
Initially, this is rather an incongruous scene for the uninitiated visitor to this part of Wales - an emu quite happily sharing the fields with a flock of sheep!
This local Welsh farm originally had a flock of about 20 emus around 7 years ago, who roamed the fields with the sheep. Apparently, they're an excellent deterrent against foxes, especially during lambing season, being able to run at around 60mph and going for anything that looks like a dog/fox that they're unfamiliar with!
Many thanks to the local farmer and then his son who stopped initially to attract the bird to our location and then spent time to chat with us, despite an impossibly busy farming schedule this time of year. Apparently the emu is the sole survivor of the flock - the others having either been sold on to other farms or having died.
