Heading for the Calf over Fell Head
Heading for the Calf over Fell Head
On the 1:25000 map it appears that Fell Head is where the photographer is standing whilst on the larger scale, the name seems to apply to the cairn on the top ahead of us, which is about ten metres higher (but with no spot height). Whichever, or if the whole thing is of the one name, the path forms a splendid romp with very little descent and reascent all the way across the Howgill Fells summit plateau to the Calf, still some three kilometres away at this point. Having noted that the parking at the bottom of the Cautley Spout route was already full as we passed, this western approach is also ideal for a socially distanced outing - we met just one couple all day apart from in the immediate vicinity of the Calf where we did not linger.
