Traversing across Whin's End
In order to return to the only adequate parking place on the minor road from Sedbergh to Low Borrowdale, just north of Fairmile Gate (you can just make out two cars parked off the road in the full-size photo), we have hacked off-piste by virtue of this all being CROW Access land, crossing a low col north of Brown Moor and traversing the western slopes of the Howgill Fells. If nothing else, this route provides more than adequate social distancing compared with the crowded ascent of the Calf via the Cautley Spout path on the eastern side. By staying reasonably high, one can avoid too much drop and reascent in crossing Fairmile Beck ahead, and a good path materialises on the far side.
