NZ3041 : Sherburn House railway station (site), County Durham

taken 4 years ago, near to Shincliffe, County Durham, England

Sherburn House railway station (site), County Durham
Sherburn House railway station (site), County Durham
Opened in 1893 by the North Eastern Railway on the line from Sunderland to Durham (Elvet), this station (in a shallow cutting to the right of the house) replaced an earlier 1837 station on the line to Shincliffe (probably to the left of the house but early maps are unclear). In turn, this station closed to passengers in 1931 and completely in 1954.
View south west from what is now the A181, towards Durham. The single platform of the 1893 station appears to have been covered over by landscaping.
