Crowds at the Leamington Peace Festival, June 2014
The weekend before the summer solstice is a good time to remember Leamington Peace Festival, which took place on this weekend every year from 1978 to 2019, but was cancelled for the following two years owing to the coronavirus pandemic. It has always been a free festival, which is to say it is free to visit, and it takes place in the Pump Room Gardens, in the centre of Leamington Spa. It appears to be financed mainly by commercial stallholders booking pitches, including businesses that stop here en route to the Glastonbury Festival, which takes place shortly afterwards, and this gives it a 'hippie festival' vibe. But the heart of the festival is to be found in the presence of local civil society, health and community groups running stalls. There is also live music on a main stage and also on a smaller stage on the park bandstand, which is visible in this photo.
