James Starley bicycle mural, Pool Meadow bus station, Coventry
Mural painted on a side wall of the bus station in March 2021 by Angry Dan, as part of the UK City of Culture activities in Coventry. Link (Archive Link ) It features a limerick (which does not scan properly), which together with the 'penny farthing' image remembers the engineer James Starley, whose designs and business skill played a central role in the development of the modern bicycle in Coventry in the 1870s. With William Hillman he made a penny farthing model with innovative wire-spoked wheels and Starley later patented the chain-drive differential gear train. LinkLink Motor vehicles parked in the space in front of the mural made it difficult to photograph and would have made the gimmicky rainbow bicycle stands impossible to use.
The building that this mosaic SP3379 : Mosaic detail in Cov Centre. decorates was originally the Locarno ballroom, hence the jolly design. The artist was Fred Millet.
