taken 5 years ago, near to Countess Wear, Devon, England

Cruise boat on Exeter Canal
Cruise boat on Exeter Canal
From time to time, depending on the tides, cruise boats from Exmouth use the Exeter Canal; in the background of the bow is the road bridge over the River Exe. The picture is taken from the Exe Valley Way
River Exe

The River Exe rises on Exmoor and flows south to Exeter and The English Channel. Its estuary is a good example of a Ria (flooded river valley). It is tidal to Countess Wear, just south of Exeter SX9390 : St James Weir, River Exe. More information LinkExternal link

Exeter Canal

Built in the 1560, this is one of the oldest canals in Britain. It was built to allow the port of Exeter access to the sea, bypassing the Quay downstream at Topsham. LinkExternal link

Exe Valley Way

A 45 mile walk along the Exe valley. The route from the Exe Estuary to the steeply wooded valleys on Exmoor follows, for the most part, quiet country lanes and footpaths along the Exe valley through Bickleigh, Tiverton and Bampton. Mostly valley scenery, ranging from the broad estuary through pastoral landscapes and narrower, heavily-wooded valleys to open moorland landscapes.
