In his 1903 published book, 'Upper Coquetdale Northumberland Its History, Traditions, Folk-lore and Scenery', David Dippie Dixon described Harbottle as having, "the Town Hall at the east end of the village", and, "the Presbyterian Church at the west end". The church, which was built in 1854 and is no longer used as such, is the large building on the extreme right of the photograph and is a Grade II Listed building. At the time of Dippie Dixon's book, the village also had, "the Parish Schools, the village inn, several comfortable lodging houses for visitors, a Police Office, and the Post Office."
