Martyr's Grave (John Brown Memorial)
Martyr's Grave (John Brown Memorial)
This monument, erected in 1825, marks the spot where the Covenanter John Brown of the nearby farm of Priesthill was reputedly shot dead by the government soldier Graham of Claverhouse in 1685. It encloses his grave and marks it with a pillar. Covenanters were opponents of interference in the affairs of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland by the Stuart kings, and were persecuted by those loyal to the Crown.

This view shows the wider moorland setting of the monument.
