Ordnance Survey documents indicate that a benchmark was levelled at 59.552 feet above Liverpool Datum during the 1841-1844 Liverpool to Port Carlisle 1GL Survey on a flag at this junction. The surveyor's description was 'Branch Levelling from Mark No. 471. Mark on flags, at junction of Tower-street and Scotch-street ; level with surface'. The junction has been remodelled since then.
