It is not at all obvious why the Stars and Stripes flag is flying alongside the two national ones. The club website does state however that both the Walker Cup and Curtis Cup were contested on its course within the last 20 years or so, so perhaps this is why. Considering that both these trophies are competed for by teams of amateur golfers from Great Britain and Ireland (playing as one), and America, if this is the reason it seems a bit unfair that the Irish flag is absent.
The Walker Cup is played for by men and the Curtis Cup by women. They are the amateur equivalents of the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup respectively, though both the professional events are between the whole of Europe and America.
A bit of trivia about the Walker Cup is that it is named after George Herbert Walker, a leading golf administrator in his day and the grandfather of America's first President Bush, whose full name is George Herbert Walker Bush, in honour of him.
