Caernarfon Maritime Museum - Seiont II circulating pump
On board the steam grab dredger Seiont II that was built in 1937 by W J Yarwood of Northwich to dredge Caernarfon Harbour. The vessel was 86' 8" long with a 20' beam It was withdrawn in 1978 and preserved as part of the Maritime Museum. Unfortunately it was scrapped in 1999 but the engine was saved by Markham Grange steam Museum.
This is in the engine room looking to the port side and slightly aft. To the top left is the surface condenser for the main engine. Cooling sea water is circulated through this condenser by this centrifugal pump and inverted vertical single cylinder steam engine ensemble. The pump and engine were by Drysdale of Yoker, Glasgow.
Although the main engine was saved, the unique ambience of a marine engine room has been lost forever. Only those who have been in a live marine engine room can appreciate how the whole seems to be so much more than the sum of its parts.
