Old door in a garden wall by St Nicholas Park, Warwick
The present way into the park from Emscote Road first shows on a map of 1938; before that it was a large private garden. It seems likely that since that time the owner of the adjoining property formed their own private gate into the park. It was revealed when the council's contractor cleared undergrowth and unwanted conifers. The area is in the right distance in SP2965 : A tent near the Emscote Road entrance to St Nicholas Park, Warwick.
The elephant and castle is the original name for this pub and goes back at least as far as 1880 when it was a humble beerhouse. The name of Simple Simon was coined in the 1970s and was linked to the Shires pie factory that was close by. The Elephant and Castle most likely refers to the coat of arms of the City of Coventry
