HS2 will cross the Grand Union Canal here on a viaduct. The removal of the canalside vegetation has opened up a view of Long Itchington Wood on the hill. HS2 will run beneath it in two tunnels. A tunnelling machine, brought from Germany in parts, is being reassembled on the level concrete floor of a huge void, excavated to allow the assembled machine to start tunnelling at the planned depth. To the right a mound of red spoil dwarfs everything. The camera location is just east of Longhole Bridge; the subject location is general and estimated. The tall vertical elements on the contractor's site are a puzzle: they do not seem to relate to any feature on the plans.
