Spotted orchid
Several of these orchids were in bloom among other wild flowers on ungrazed grassland within a few metres of the shore of Loch Dunvegan. I think this is the Heath (or Moorland) Spotted Orchid (Dactylorhiza maculata) rather than the "common" Spotted Orchid (D. fuchsii) which despite its name is very uncommon in northern Scotland. Linnaeus in 1753 originally classified it as Orchis maculata on the basis of the purple spots on the leaves; the genus name was changed to Dactylorchis in 1947 from the resemblance of the tubers to the fingers of a hand, and subsequently to Dactylorhiza ("finger-root").

One of many seedheads of the Scottish wild hyacinth or English bluebell (Hyacynthoides non-scripta, formerly Endymion non-scriptus or Scilla non-scripta) can be seen to the left; in Skye these bloom throughout May and into early June. In Scotland the name Bluebell is given to the unrelated plant Campanula rotundifolia, known in England as the Harebell.
